Ian and Amelia Bacon hold trophies during a school celebration

Since Vista PEAK Preparatory first opened in 2011, the school had never won a state championship in any team or individual sport. Well, time to rewrite the record books. Two standout wrestlers from the same family recently captured Vista PEAK’s first state championships!

Amelia Bacon took the top spot in the Class 5A girls 125-pound final and Ian won the 5A boys 120-pound competition. The twin siblings, who are both juniors, not only became the first in their school's history to win state championships, but also the first-ever girl/boy twins to win wrestling championships in Colorado.

The Bacons credit their strong sibling bond, their faith and their love of competition as key factors in their success. Whether it’s practicing wrestling techniques against each other on the mat or encouraging each other to say no to favorite treats like ice cream so they can stick with their diets, the results were undeniable.

When referring to her championship, Amelia said, “It was awesome to be able to do that for our school. I want to be a two-timer [champion], that’s for sure. My goal is to get better every day.”

Ian echoed that goal of winning another state championship his senior year. “I hope we leave a good legacy for our wrestling program,” he said. “I want to put Vista PEAK wrestling on the map.”
