Ruth Hitchcock and Letrenda Thomas love their jobs. In fact, it’s kept them serving Aurora Public Schools (APS) students longer than some would expect.
The paraprofessional and bus driver, who have been in their respective roles for 61 years combined, were just two of many APS Transportation Department employees who were treated to lots of love and kindness for the annual Love the Bus celebration. The Valentine’s Day themed event, now in its 20th year in APS, shines a light on some of our most invaluable staff members.
“I enjoy being outdoors, rain, hail, sleet or snow,” Thomas said. “I love doing SPED (special education). I enjoy picking up my kids, taking them home, meeting parents, etc. I just enjoy it. I absolutely love what I do.”
The love goes both ways, as staff congregated for a catered lunch and fun games to help compliment their day. APS Board of Education and Leadership Team members joined their colleagues and helped announce special gifts for various lucky winners. Additionally, the department’s hallways were filled with posters, artwork and symbols of love and appreciation from students and staff members alike.
“It’s nice to feel appreciated,” Thomas said, “and to be seen.”
Hitchcock said her 40-year career in APS has produced many heart-grabbing moments, like when some students she serves ask other children on the bus to be nice to her. Why, you ask?
Because, “I was their mom [on the bus].”
Hitchcock later explained that her extended time in the district has allowed her to serve under numerous leadership regimes while also seeing former students now thriving as adults. For her, it doesn’t get any better than that.
“We work as a team, and we work hard. I really enjoy the people I work with. That’s what stands out.”
While the Love the Bus celebration is recognized nationwide, it hits home in a resounding fashion in Aurora.
“Kids don’t get to school without you,” exclaimed Janet Ulrich, director of the APS Transportation Department.
The undertone of that compliment cannot be overstated. School bus drivers, paraprofessionals—and the people supporting them behind the scenes—are such key cogs in the overall operation of any school district. Be it early arrival times to the bus depot, maneuvering large vehicles in sometimes difficult weather conditions, or supervising their precious cargo, these professionals are nothing short of beloved heroes.
