APS' First Dual Language School Opens Aug. 2026
Posted on 09/16/2025

Aurora Public Schools is proud to announce something truly special! In August 2026, we will open our district’s first Spanish/English dual language magnet school at the former Sixth Avenue Elementary School site.

This new school will welcome preschool through fifth-grade students from across APS, starting with preschool through first grade for the 2026-27 school year. Transportation will be provided.

No previous Spanish exposure? No hay problema. Students from all ethnic and language backgrounds are encouraged to apply beginning Nov. 3, ¡porque todos son bienvenidos! More details on the application process will be shared soon.

Why are we so excited? Because bilingualism is a superpower! Research shows it sharpens cognitive skills, opens higher-paying career opportunities, builds confidence and more.

Students will master core subjects such as math, science, social studies and literacy while becoming bilingual in Spanish and English. Using a gradual 90/10 model, instruction will be given in 90 percent Spanish and 10 percent English in preschool, gradually shifting to a 50/50 balance in the upper grades.

Be Part of the Legacy
Principal Anabel Rafoul is forming the APS Dual Language School Advisory Committee for the first year of planning to help determine the school’s name, vision, mission and more. APS students, parents, staff and community members are encouraged to fill out this form by Sept. 25 to express interest.
