What does it mean to you to be awarded this scholarship? Not only do I get to live out my dreams, but my family's dreams. Growing up in a low-income household, I never thought that pursuing post-secondary education was an option for me. Many of my family members aspired to attend college but lacked the financial support. At first, I was even hesitant due to the cost but this scholarship removes any stress about my financial situation. I am proudly committed to the University of Colorado Boulder and will study Biological Engineering.

What's kept you motivated? The consistent support from my friends and family. I don't think I would have applied to college or even the Boettcher Scholarship had it not been for the encouragement from my teachers, friends and family. In addition, there have been times where I believed that I couldn't go beyond my perceived limits. However, with a mixture of my passion for wanting to make a difference and my curiosity for learning, I strive to go beyond what I initially thought was possible.

Any advice for those hoping to follow your example? Never be afraid to seek out new opportunities. Don't wait for them to come to you but actively make an effort to try something new. The biggest thing I learned in high school is that stepping out of your comfort zone can allow you to do so much. It’s normal to be hesitant, but growth can only happen if we're uncomfortable.

What does it mean to you to be awarded this scholarship? Being awarded this scholarship is a physical representation of my hard work and commitment throughout my years of high school. I was fearful of where I'd end up in college due to the financial cost. This scholarship has made it possible for me to chase my dreams of giving back to the environment that has helped me so much. I hope to study Political Science and to pursue a law degree following my bachelor's degree.

What's kept you motivated? My motivation has always been my peers and family. I give credit to the people God has placed in my life as well as the passion and drive I've been gifted. All together each aspect of my life, hard or easy, has rocketed me towards a craving for success and change.

Any advice for those hoping to follow your example? Look for your passion and try new things. You receive what you put into most activities. Ask questions. Take advantage of the opportunities and resources available to you. Always work to be where you want to be. Surround yourself with people who crave success in the same manner as you. And oh my gosh, I beg you–balance your hard work with something to ground you. You're more amazing than you think!
