Denver Broncos’ superstar Patrick Surtain II dropped in on the Cougars to unveil a state-of-the-art STEAM classroom. Dubbed the “Patrick Surtain II Inspiration Room,” the transformed space will help students hone their craft in creativity.

“This year I wanted to focus on art, so I'm proud that Columbia received the grant,” said Surtain, the 2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year. “From digital arts to photography, students will be able to collaborate cohesively in a safe space.”

The revitalized learning environment includes 25 professional-grade cameras and related equipment, along with new supplies and creative resources tailored to the school’s graphic design and digital art curriculum. New classroom furniture, custom interior paint and inspirational wall graphics round out the space, creating an environment designed for students to collaborate and explore their creativity.

Serving students in grades 6-8, the classroom will be home to hands-on learning, ensuring Columbia’s creatives will wow us in the future.

“This is bridging the gap between digital theory and real-world production,” said Katie Law, principal at Columbia. “This is showing our students that their stories matter and their potential is limitless.”

Between the hallway-long high-five line, the many autographs and multiple ribbon cuttings, the students had plenty to take in. Through it all, they never lost sight of the opportunity before them.
“It’s very inspirational to do something big with my life,” said 8th-grader Chris Sedzro.

“I've always been interested in photography,” said 8th-grader Olivia Coleman. “This classroom really makes a difference.”

But even more than the high-tech gear and refreshed room, Surtain wants Columbia students to know that he believes in them.

“Not everyone is going to play football, and that's okay, because each of you have your own gifts and passions,” said Surtain. “This inspiration room is here to remind you that your future is worth investing in–no matter what inspires you.”
