It’s Official! APS’ New Dual Language School Named Escuela Bilingüe Betty Benavidez

Aurora Public Schools is thrilled to announce the name of our new Spanish/English dual language magnet school: Escuela Bilingüe Betty Benavidez!
The APS Board of Education approved the name at its January business meeting.
APS students, families, staff and community members overwhelmingly voted to honor the late Betty Benavidez (1935-2013), a barrier-breaking trailblazer who made history in 1971 as the first Hispanic woman elected to the Colorado State Legislature.
While in office, Betty sponsored Colorado’s first bilingual bill, the “Bilingual Bicultural Act,” forever changing the educational landscape by championing bilingual and bicultural learning for all students. She also advocated for basic healthcare for children and helped develop minority studies in state colleges.
In the mid 1960s, Betty and her husband, community organizer Waldo Benavidez, used their home in Denver’s West Side as a local hub for the Civil Rights Movement. They also joined their friend César Chávez in his fast to draw attention to the plight of farmworkers across the nation.
Betty was hailed as one of the madres del movimiento (mothers of the movement). Today, her name will live on, not only in history books, but on the front of a school that channels her courage.
The school’s mascot, Los Colibrís (The Hummingbirds), symbolizes joy, transformation, resilience and hope, qualities that defined Betty’s life and will shape the next generation of bilingual learners and leaders.
The Benavidez Family expressed deep gratitude in having their beloved matriarch shine as the school’s namesake. Principal Anabel Rafoul and her team are excited to honor the family, including Betty’s four children Steve, Susan, Donnie, and Tom by ensuring the school reflects the strength and dignity of the Benavidez name.
This is more than a new school. It is the continuation of a movement, the fulfillment of a promise and a celebration of culture, language and unity.
Escuela Bilingüe Betty Benavidez will open in August 2026 at the former Sixth Avenue Elementary School site. The school will welcome preschool through fifth-grade students from across the district, beginning with preschool through first grade for the 2026-27 school year. Each year, they will add a new grade until they reach fifth grade.
Using a gradual 90/10 model, instruction will be given in 90 percent Spanish and 10 percent English in preschool, gradually shifting to a 50/50 balance in the upper grades. Research shows that biliteracy sharpens cognitive skills, opens higher-paying career opportunities, builds confidence and fosters cultural connections.

Las Escuelas Públicas de Aurora (APS) se complacen en anunciar el nombre de nuestra nueva escuela magnet bilingüe español/inglés: ¡Escuela Bilingüe Betty Benavidez!
La Junta Directiva de APS aprobó el nombre en su reunión del 13 de enero.
Estudiantes, familias, personal y miembros de la comunidad de APS votaron de manera significativa en honor a la fallecida Betty Benavidez (1935–2013), una pionera que rompió barreras e hizo historia en 1971 como la primera mujer hispana elegida para la Legislatura del Estado de Colorado.
Durante su gestión, Betty propuso e impulsó la primera ley bilingüe de Colorado, la “Ley Bilingüe Bicultural”, transformando para siempre el panorama educativo al defender el aprendizaje bilingüe y bicultural para todos los estudiantes. También abogó por el acceso a servicios básicos de salud para la niñez y ayudó a desarrollar e implementar los estudios sobre las minorías en las universidades estatales.
A mediados de la década de 1960, Betty y su esposo, el organizador comunitario Waldo Benavidez, utilizaron su hogar ubicada en el lado oeste de Denver como un centro local del Movimiento por los Derechos Civiles. Asimismo, se unieron a su amigo César Chávez en su ayuno para llamar la atención sobre la situación de los trabajadores agrícolas en todo el país.
Betty fue reconocida como una de las madres del movimiento. Hoy, su nombre vivirá no solo en los libros de historia, sino también en la entrada de una escuela que refleja su valentía.
La mascota de la escuela, Los Colibrís, simboliza la alegría, la transformación, la resiliencia y la esperanza—cualidades que definieron la vida de Betty y que guiarán a la próxima generación de estudiantes y líderes bilingües.
La familia Benavidez expresó su profundo agradecimiento por la distinción de que nuestra escuela sea nombrada en honor a su querida matriarca. La Escuela Bilingüe Betty Benavidez abrirá en agosto de 2026 en el sitio de la antigua escuela primaria Sixth Avenue. La escuela atenderá a estudiantes desde preescolar hasta quinto grado de todo el distrito, comenzando con preescolar a primer grado durante el año escolar 2026–27. Cada año se añadirá un grado hasta llegar a quinto grado.
Utilizando un modelo gradual 90/10, la instrucción se impartirá en un 90 % en español y un 10 % en inglés en preescolar, avanzando gradualmente hasta un equilibrio 50/50 en los grados superiores.
