"Here!" This simple expression is one of the most important and impactful statements a student can make each school day. Research shows that attendance is one of the largest factors in a student's academic success.
Did you know that a child who misses just two days of school a month (excused or unexcused) over the course of a year is at risk of not reading proficiently by the end of third grade, struggling academically in middle school and/or dropping out of high school?
Absences add up!
A student who does not attend school regularly may even have trouble making close friends. Absenteeism can affect the whole child, negatively impacting their social, emotional and physical well-being.

In Aurora Public Schools, we know that in order for our students to power their potential, they must understand the power of being present. Although some absences are unavoidable, we offer a few tips below that encourage families to build good habits at home.
- Establish a regular bedtime and morning routine.
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
- Create backup plans for getting your child to school if something comes up.
- Avoid extended trips and non-urgent medical appointments when school is in session.
- Make sure your child receives required vaccinations.
- Ensure your child feels safe at school and connect them with emotional support.
- Let your child's school know if you need help removing any barriers.
- Get involved at your child's school.
Families are our partners in education, but everybody plays a role in ensuring students attend school regularly. For example, local businesses can incentivize students for good or improved attendance. Before- and after-school program providers can ensure students have engaging morning and afternoon activities that they won't want to miss. As they say, "It takes a village."
With each new school year comes change, but one thing that remains the same is the importance of good attendance. We look forward to a successful and well-attended school year!
