October has a special focus in Aurora Public Schools (APS) because this is
College and Career Success Month. One of the most important ways the district helps prepare students for success beyond high school is by providing innovative pathways for students to explore their passions. APS just launched a new pathway this fall called ConstrucTECH.
ConstrucTECH is a new six-year integrated magnet program that students can start during their freshman year of high school. A magnet program has a special academic focus that draws students from all over the district and surrounding areas.
For students interested in careers in construction trades, supervision and management, ConstrucTECH offers a unique opportunity to gain proficiency with hand tools, power tools and the necessary coursework to excel on the job site.
Vista PEAK Preparatory freshman and member of the ConstrucTECH program Xan Safin said, “I enjoy being able to work with my hands and like-minded people. It allows me to build soft skills like leadership and communication, as well as learning to work with tools and learning the rules and regulations of the industry.”
Another Vista PEAK freshman, Nikko Aragon, added, “There is a large amount of hands-on learning involved and it provides a great opportunity for potential careers for students in their future.”
ConstrucTECH is currently offered at Vista PEAK Preparatory and Gateway High School. In addition to working with construction tools, students also work with potential employers who provide meaningful mentoring, job shadowing, internships and apprenticeships.
Students who complete the program will earn a high school diploma and an industry-recognized Associate Degree in Construction Management from the Community College of Aurora. For more information about this amazing new program, visit the
