A custom-built 37-foot trailer equipped with state-of-the-art technology and interactive tools recently transported Mrachek Middle School students into the captivating realm of science.
This wonder on wheels, known as Sci on the Fly, is Colorado State University’s groundbreaking initiative to inspire the next generation by bringing science to life in a way that's both immersive and accessible.
Wade Ingle, associate director of outreach and engagement for CSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and his team of enthusiastic scientists were met with curious faces and a whirlwind of eager energy.
The visit, organized by Mrachek’s CTE program for computer science, pre engineering and career study students, was divided into three engaging sessions, each focusing on a different branch of science.
The first highlight was a virtual reality (VR) lesson that allowed students to explore animal anatomy through 3D programming designed 100 percent by CSU students. Mrachek students gasped as they stepped into the virtual world, waving their wands in the air to explore the intricacies of stunning specimens in detail, examining organs and systems in a way that textbooks could never provide. For some, it was their first time wearing a VR headset.
Following the virtual adventure, students were led outside to get up close and personal with real animal bones. The spread ranged from a tiny turtle’s skeletal remains to massive elk antlers. This hands-on experience gifted students a tangible connection to the world of animal anatomy.
Students also engaged in an informative lesson about public health. They analyzed case studies and maps to diagnose medical problems and determine the impact industries and water quality have on those problems. They learned about the field of epidemiology and how bacteria and viruses impact quality of life.
As the CSU team bid farewell to Mrachek, there was a palpable sense of transformation in the air. The visit from the traveling science lab was more than just a day of fun; it was a catalyst for students to consider future careers in science-related fields. Many students left with a newfound appreciation for the wonders of science and the fulfilling career opportunities that await them.
This is a wonderful example of the district’s efforts to help every student create a plan for their future. We applaud CSU for joining our community of support to break barriers of accessibility to such phenomenal learning opportunities.
