In the world of sports, where competition often takes center stage, lies a realm where unity outshines the final score. Welcome to the heartwarming world of Unified Sports!
In this arena, students with and without disabilities showcase their talents on the same athletic teams. It's a place where athletes from all walks of life come together, not to be defined by their differences, but to celebrate their shared passion for the game.
From Unified Track & Field to Unified Bowling, Basketball and Soccer, Aurora Public Schools (APS) is proud to offer a wide array of opportunities for students to find their names on team rosters, no matter their knowledge or skill level.
To integrate Unified Sports in all middle and high schools, APS became the first district in Colorado to create a position dedicated to guiding and growing our Unified Sports teams. Meet Mary Martinez, APS’ first-ever Unified Sports Coordinator.
“It’s so empowering to be part of a district focused on equity and building inclusive opportunities for students,” said Martinez.
After being involved in Unified Sports for more than 15 years and serving 10 years as a teacher for students with special needs, Martinez deems her new role a “dream job.” The best part? Seeing the impact being made, not just on students, but also their families.
“One of the most powerful things a parent said to me after a unified event was, ‘I didn't know my child could do that!’,” Martinez shared. “And it wasn't that they didn't believe their child was able, but that their child never had an opportunity to show these particular strengths.”
Martinez notes that this sentiment is shared by parents of children without disabilities who serve as peer partners. These students also haven’t had many opportunities to showcase their leadership skills or empathy for others.
“If you’re thinking about joining a Unified Sports team, go for it!” said Columbia Middle School Peer Partner Fatai Ngungutau. “You meet a lot of new people. You make new friends. And, once you get to know them a little bit better, they’re like family to you.”
It’s said that Unified Sports events are the best events of the year. Join as a fan cheering in the stands or a player giving their all on the field - all are welcome in the world of Unified Sports!
“Doing something new can be uncomfortable, but give it a chance!” Martinez exclaimed. “You can show up to a practice and decide that this isn’t for you; but follow your curiosity.”
