Colorado Academic Standards

The Colorado Department of Education and Aurora Public Schools has adopted the WIDA ELD Standards as a part of the Colorado Academic Standards. These standards, specifically related to developing English language proficiency, are called the Colorado English Language Proficiency Standards or CELP Standards.

Here is an example of one of the five CELP standards:

  • English language learners communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the content areas of Language Arts.

The other standards include the language of Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, and Social Instructional Language.

State Testing for English Language Learners

Every year, all students identified as English Language Learners in the state of Colorado take a standardized test to measure proficiency towards the CELP standards. This test is called the WIDA ACCESS test and is normally administered in the month of January.

After the test is completed, individual student results are provided to the school and the student's family. Information is available here, in 47 different languages, to help families understand what their child's individual scores mean.

Here is a sample of what the individual student report looks like:

READ Act Plans and English Language Learners

The READ Act is a Colorado law that sets guidelines to ensure every student completes third-grade reading at or above grade level. It helps schools to identify students who need additional instructional support in order to read at grade level.
