The APS Welcome Center provides support for newcomer students, families, and schools, helping them feel welcomed, informed, and empowered within Aurora Public Schools. Our services focus on orientation, academic and social support, family engagement, and cultural connection, ensuring students thrive and families feel part of the APS community.

Schools & Staff

  • Student Summaries – Brief overviews of newcomer students’ strengths and needs to help educators provide personalized support.
  • Professional Development – Training for teachers on academic strategies and cultural awareness.
  • Grade Placement & Transcript Review – Assistance with appropriate grade levels and interpreting international transcripts.
  • Co-Planning – Guidance for teachers designing lessons for newcomer students.

Students & Families

  • Interview & Orientation – Personalized sessions introducing families to APS, exploring students’ backgrounds, and explaining school expectations.
  • Family Engagement – Liaisons connect families with schools, events, and resources.
  • International Family Engagement Event (IFEE) – Bi-Annual Welcoming event introducing families to educational systems, community resources, and other APS families. 
  • Family & Student Workshops – Topics include:
    • Mental health and wellness
    • College and career readiness
    • School Attendance
    • Parenting (learning U.S. expectations and strategies)
    • Parenting strategies
    • Supporting students with disabilities
    • Anti-bullying
    • Juvenile crime prevention
      (Offered in partnership with College and Career Success, CLDE, Behavior System Support, School Resource Officers, Arc of Aurora, and community partners.)
  • College & Career Visits – Opportunities for families and students to explore local colleges and post-secondary pathways.
  • Summer Camp for Elementary & Middle School Students – English development and enrichment activities in partnership with YMCA.
