Pickens student gets diploma at graduation ceremony

When students start exploring their career options, one of the best places to start is right in our own backyard. Aurora’s Pickens Technical College is a leader in vocational opportunities not just in Colorado, but the entire country.

USA TODAY recently named Pickens Tech one of the Top 250 Vocational Schools in the US. The schools were judged on their graduation rate, graduates' salaries, years it takes to pay off net cost, social mobility and diversity. And among the top 250, Pickens was one of only 117 schools to receive five stars – the highest rating.

“We are honored to receive this national recognition from USA TODAY,” said Andrew Vidockler, Assistant Director at Pickens. “This 5-star rating is a testament to the impactful work that takes place on our campus every day, led by our dedicated faculty and staff who are deeply committed to preparing students to thrive in their careers. This acknowledgment reflects our ongoing mission to deliver unsurpassed, equitable Career and Technical Education that meets the needs of both our students and the workforce.”

At Pickens, students of all ages will find more than 25 different certificate programs in a variety of areas:

  • Arts & Technology
  • Human Services
  • Skilled Trades
  • Business & Marketing
  • Health
  • Natural Sciences

Both students and staff agree that Pickens Tech is an incredibly valuable resource where they can learn new skills and build their community.

Justin Bradshaw, Motorcycle Service Technology Advanced Technician Student
“The community at this school is very strong, there’s a lot of diverse programs. It seems like even between the machinist, the hair stylist, the nurse - they’re all another part of that community. High school and adult learners, everybody is seen as a student, and there’s a mutual respect between all learners. It’s fantastic to be at a school like that.”

Erika Varao, Medical Assisting Instructor
“I love Pickens because this is the school I wish I could have gone to. I struggled all throughout high school. I came from an immigrant family. I’ve been some of these students. Here, our instructors have been in the shoes of our students. This is the school that is made for kids like me.”

Sophie Frick, Barber Student (SkillsUSA National Finalist – 2nd place)
“The stuff we’re doing in class, the different types of people we get into the shop, and being in different situations – we’re doing the same thing we’ll be doing in our everyday life when we graduate. It gave me a new perspective on what my future looks like.”

Darcy Niblo, Master Automotive Service Technician Instructor
“As an instructor, I look at Pickens pretty much as family. They’ve been behind me and the support I’ve received here has been unbelievable. Almost bring-a-tear-to-your-eye unbelievable. Everyone from other instructors to administrators and beyond. From every level there is, it’s been so supportive.”

October is College Awareness Month in Aurora Public Schools, and some important dates to keep in mind are the Colorado Free Application Days from October 7-9. All of the state’s public colleges and universities and many private institutions waive application fees during this three-day period so make sure to take advantage!
